More About Zapier

Three guys from Columbia, Missouri walked into a startup weekend. One was a jazz saxophonist who couldn't code. One was a jazz bassist who could. One had found them both on a Hacker News map overlay showing the only two technically minded people in their entire city. They built the first prototype of Zapier in two days — a simple tool that let non-technical users connect web apps without writing code — and within 48 hours, strangers on the internet were telling them to shut up and take their money. Wade Foster, Bryan Helmig, and Mike Knoop had just stumbled onto the most underserved problem in business software: the average company was using 130 different apps, none of which talked to each other, and connecting them required either a developer or a prayer. Zapier was the prayer that actually worked.

The company raised $1.4 million total — less than most startups spend on office furniture in their first year — went profitable in 2014, and built to $310M ARR by the end of 2023 , without selling a single share in the 2021 secondary transaction that valued the company at $5 billion. The three co-founders still own the majority. 1,221 employees across 40 countries, every single one of them remote — not remote-first, not hybrid, but remote from day one in 2011. The Zapier origin story is now taught in business schools as the canonical example of capital efficiency: $1 from every $1 of revenue re-invested, a business that grew because it was useful, not because it was funded. Wade Foster graduated during the financial crisis, took a job at a small software company because nothing else was available, fell in love with building software, and never left the building mindset. The jazz saxophonist who couldn't code became the CEO of a $5 billion company by understanding one thing deeply: if you automate people's tedious work better than anyone else, they will find you and pay you and tell everyone they know.

In 2024, Zapier made its most consequential product bet since the original Zap: it declared itself an AI orchestration platform and began shipping fast. Zapier Copilot builds entire automation workflows from plain English — describe what you want connected, watch it build. Zapier Agents creates AI teammates that run autonomously across the full 8,000+ app catalog, able to take up to 40 actions per task on the Team plan, with background execution and MCP support for any external AI model. Zapier MCP — launched in 2025 — turns the entire Zapier integration catalog into a tool library that Claude, ChatGPT, and any MCP-compatible AI agent can use directly, without building a single custom integration. Zapier Canvas, the AI-powered strategy workspace, lets teams plan automations visually before building them. The company that connected apps is now the connective tissue of the AI agent ecosystem — the infrastructure layer that gives agents access to the human web of work that exists inside every business's app stack. Three million businesses. Eight thousand integrations. Fourteen years of uninterrupted profitability. That is not a startup story anymore. That is infrastructure.
