Funding Update

Dec 2025

Secondary market tender offer in December 2025 valued Notion at $11B — a modest premium to the 2021 primary round valuation, reflecting the company's disciplined approach to capital (more cash on balance sheet than total raised). Revenue had grown from $67M ARR at the 2021 primary round to $600M ARR by December 2025 — making the multiple compress from ~149x to ~18x over the same period as the business grew into its valuation. Notion has confirmed no plans for a primary funding round, with the company generating significant free cash flow. IPO speculation growing for 2026–2027 window. Tracxn confirmed $11B valuation as of this date.

Funding Update

$275M

Oct 2021

Raised $275M in October 2021 at $10B valuation — the largest funding round in Notion's history and a 5x valuation jump from the Series B in 18 months. Led by Coatue Management and Sequoia Capital (referred to as Series C by some sources and Series D by others; Tracxn classifies it as Series D). Sequoia partner Pat Grady publicly called the $10B valuation 'very painful' given the high multiple, but invested anyway based on Notion's trajectory. Revenue had crossed $67M ARR in 2022 and $250M ARR by November 2023, making the $10B appear reasonable in retrospect. Notion has maintained this same $10B–$11B primary valuation through multiple secondary transactions rather than raising primary capital again — a sign of founder confidence and cash generation. Founder Ivan Zhao retained 30% ownership through all rounds.

Funding Update

$50M

Apr 2020

Raised $50M Series B at $2B valuation led by Index Ventures — a 2.5x valuation jump from the Series A in under 12 months. Index partner Nina Achadjian reportedly made the investment decision in 36 hours after Zhao started looking, citing explosive COVID-era remote work adoption as a demand catalyst. Notion had crossed $13.3M ARR by April 2020 and was growing at 50%+ quarter-over-quarter. The round closed as offices worldwide shut down and Notion saw a surge in sign-ups from distributed teams needing shared knowledge bases.

More About Notion AI

In 2015, with their startup nearly bankrupt and their four-person team laid off, Ivan Zhao and Simon Last moved to Kyoto, Japan, and spent 18 hours a day writing code and eating noodles. They rebuilt Notion from scratch — new tech stack, new architecture, new everything. They had no guarantee it would work. When Notion 1.0 shipped in 2018, it worked. When Notion 2.0 shipped the same year with databases, it changed how an entire generation of knowledge workers organized their professional lives. Today Notion has 100 million users, a $10 billion valuation, and zero VC board seats — Zhao retained unusual control specifically so the product could stay focused on being genuinely useful rather than growing for its own sake.

The AI chapter started in February 2023 with a writing assistant, and has accelerated dramatically since. The separate Notion AI add-on was eliminated in May 2025, and full AI access — including AI Agents and Ask Notion — was bundled into the Business plan at $20/user/month, which now includes GPT-4.1 and Claude 3.7 Sonnet for generation, AI Meeting Notes that automatically attach to every calendar event, and AI Search that surfaces answers from across Notion, Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, and Notion Mail simultaneously. AI Agents — launched September 2025 — handle repetitive tasks autonomously and are free to try, then $10 per 1,000 credits. Notion Mail, released April 2025 as a Gmail-based email client with AI-native triage, draft assistance, and meeting scheduling built in, extends the vision further: Notion is no longer a document tool with AI bolted on. It is an ambient intelligence layer over how teams communicate, organize, and execute — positioned to compete directly with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace at a price point that includes AI by default.

Notion AI FAQ's

What is Notion AI and what can it do?

Notion AI is the AI feature layer embedded across the Notion workspace, available on Business and Enterprise plans. It includes: AI Writing (generate, edit, translate, summarize, improve tone); Q&A (ask natural language questions and get cited answers from your workspace); AI Meeting Notes (automatic transcription and summarization of calls); Enterprise Search (unified search across Notion plus connected apps like Slack, Google Drive, Teams, GitHub); Research Mode (web-grounded multi-step research tasks); and AI Agents (autonomous multi-step workflows that execute across pages, databases, and connected tools for up to 20 minutes without user input).

How does Notion AI Agents work and what can they do?

Notion AI Agents, launched September 18, 2025 with Notion 3.0, are autonomous AI workers that execute complex multi-step tasks inside Notion for up to 20 minutes without user intervention. Examples: compile all customer feedback from the last month from Slack and Google Drive, organize it into a database, draft a summary, and tag action items; or scan 500 pages for outdated content and propose updates. Agents respect existing Notion permissions — they can only access content users could already see. Custom Agents (coming soon) allow teams to configure recurring agentic workflows. AI models available include GPT-5, Claude Opus 4.1, and o3.

Is Notion AI free?

As of May 2025, Notion AI is no longer available as a paid add-on for new Free or Plus users — it is bundled exclusively into the Business plan ($20/user/month) and Enterprise plan (custom pricing). Users who purchased the AI add-on before May 2025 are grandfathered while subscribed. The Free plan and Plus plan ($10/user/month) do not include AI access for new signups. This pricing change — moving AI up-market — is a deliberate strategy to increase ARPU and drive enterprise seat expansions.

What is Notion's Q&A and Enterprise Search feature?

Notion Q&A allows users to ask conversational questions about their workspace — e.g. 'What are all the open bugs in the mobile app project?' — and receive AI-synthesized answers with citations to the source pages. Enterprise Search expands this to connected external tools including Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Gmail, and Linear, returning unified answers across all sources while respecting each tool's permissions. Ramp's head of operations described it as: 'We replaced our stand-alone search with Notion AI because answers belong where work happens.'

Who are Notion's main competitors and how does Notion AI compare?

Notion's primary competitors for AI-powered workspaces are Microsoft 365 Copilot and Google Workspace Gemini. Microsoft's advantage is enterprise distribution — Loop is bundled into existing M365 E3/E5 licenses at no incremental cost, making it near-free for organizations already paying for Microsoft 365. Google Gemini similarly benefits from installed-base distribution. Notion's advantage is flexibility, customization, and product quality — its block-based architecture enables workflows neither Microsoft nor Google can replicate. Ivan Zhao has stated Notion will win on being the best product, not on bundling. Competitor Coda is the most structurally similar product; Atlassian Confluence serves the large-enterprise documentation segment.
