More About n8n

Jan Oberhauser did not come from enterprise software. He came from visual effects studios — Digital Domain, Pixomondo, Neon — where he worked as a pipeline TD and compositor, the person responsible for making sure that the dozens of software tools, render farms, and asset management systems inside a VFX production house actually talk to each other. That problem — getting heterogeneous systems to exchange data reliably, without writing bespoke glue code for every new pairing — became his obsession. He tried to solve it with link.fish, a web scraping and data extraction startup. Then in 2019, working alone in Berlin, he built the more fundamental tool he actually needed: a node-based automation platform where any application could connect to any other application with no limits on complexity. He put it on GitHub. The community found it. And a slow, compounding flywheel started turning.

For six years, n8n grew steadily — 3,000 enterprise customers, 200,000+ active users, $74M raised across seed, Series A, and Series B. Then the AI wave arrived. In 2022, Oberhauser made the call to rebuild n8n around LLMs and AI agents as first-class citizens — not as a feature bolted onto the side, but as the primary way workflows would be designed and executed. The result was four times the revenue growth in eight months compared to the prior six years combined. By August 2025, ARR had reached $40M. In October 2025, Accel led a $180M Series C at a $2.5B valuation, with NVIDIA's NVentures and Deutsche Telekom's T.Capital joining as strategic investors. The United Nations runs mission-critical workflows on n8n. So does Microsoft, Vodafone, Wayfair, Meta, Zendesk, and Delivery Hero. There are 173,000+ stars on GitHub. The platform has 500+ integrations and ships MCP client and server nodes — meaning n8n workflows can now both consume and expose tools to AI agents from Claude, Cursor, and any other MCP-compatible system. Oberhauser's framing for where this goes: "We're building for a future where AI-driven automation becomes as essential as Excel once was."

n8n FAQ's

What is n8n and how is it different from Zapier and Make?

n8n is an open-source, fair-code workflow automation platform for technical teams. Like Zapier and Make, it lets you connect apps and automate repetitive tasks — but with three key differences: (1) You can self-host it on your own infrastructure, giving full data sovereignty; (2) You can write custom JavaScript or Python code directly inside workflows, removing the ceiling on what can be automated; (3) Pricing is workflow-execution-based rather than per-task, making it dramatically cheaper at scale. n8n also has native AI Agent nodes, MCP client/server support, LangChain integration, and multi-step autonomous agent orchestration — capabilities Zapier and Make lack or only partially support.

What does fair-code mean?

Fair-code is a licensing model invented by n8n founder Jan Oberhauser that sits between open-source and proprietary software. The n8n platform is free to use, modify, and self-host for internal workflows. If you want to offer n8n to others commercially — as a SaaS or embedded product — you need a paid license. This protects n8n from competitors simply hosting the open-source version and offering it as a paid cloud product without contributing back. Oberhauser created the faircode.io site to define and promote the concept. All n8n source code is publicly visible on GitHub (179,000+ stars as of 2026).

Can I self-host n8n for free?

Yes. n8n can be self-hosted for free under its Sustainable Use License for internal business use. You can run it via Docker, npm, or cloud VMs (AWS, GCP, DigitalOcean, etc.). The self-hosted version includes most features including AI Agent nodes, 400+ integrations, MCP support, and custom code execution. Paid self-hosted plans add enterprise features including SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, encrypted secrets, advanced user management, and SLA support. Cloud-hosted plans start at $20/month (Starter) and $50/month (Pro).

What AI capabilities does n8n have?

n8n has native AI Agent nodes powered by LangChain, allowing multi-step autonomous agents that can use tools, access memory, call APIs, and loop back based on outputs. It supports 70+ AI-specific nodes including LLM nodes (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Ollama), embedding nodes, vector database nodes (Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate), speech nodes, OCR nodes, and image model nodes. n8n also supports MCP (Model Context Protocol) client and server nodes — meaning n8n workflows can expose themselves as tools to external AI agents. 75% of n8n's 3,000+ enterprise customers use AI features in production.

What is n8n's pricing model?

n8n Cloud starts at $20/month (Starter: 2,500 workflow executions/month) and $50/month (Pro: unlimited executions with fair-use limit). Enterprise cloud pricing is custom. Self-hosted Community Edition is free. Enterprise self-hosted adds SSO, audit logs, RBAC, Git version control, and dedicated support at custom pricing. The company generates revenue through three streams: cloud subscriptions (~55% of revenue), enterprise self-hosted licenses (~30%), and embedded/OEM partnerships (~15%). n8n has 3,000+ enterprise customers with an average contract of ~$13,300/year.
