n8n is an open-source, fair-code workflow automation platform for technical teams. Like Zapier and Make, it lets you connect apps and automate repetitive tasks — but with three key differences: (1) You can self-host it on your own infrastructure, giving full data sovereignty; (2) You can write custom JavaScript or Python code directly inside workflows, removing the ceiling on what can be automated; (3) Pricing is workflow-execution-based rather than per-task, making it dramatically cheaper at scale. n8n also has native AI Agent nodes, MCP client/server support, LangChain integration, and multi-step autonomous agent orchestration — capabilities Zapier and Make lack or only partially support.
Fair-code is a licensing model invented by n8n founder Jan Oberhauser that sits between open-source and proprietary software.
