More About Mem AI

There is a quiet irony at the heart of the information age: the more we capture, the less we can find. Most note-taking apps solve only half the problem — they let you write things down, but leave the retrieval entirely to you. Mem AI was founded on the premise that this is exactly backwards.

Origin: A Second Brain, Actually Built

Kevin Moody and Dennis Xu launched Mem Labs in 2021 after years of watching knowledge workers drown in their own notes. Moody, a former Google product manager and Stanford CS graduate, had experienced firsthand how much organizational overhead consumed the mental bandwidth of executives and founders. Their thesis was simple: the organization layer should be automated, not imposed. The result was what they called "the world's first self-organizing workspace."

Within months, the product attracted serious attention. Andreessen Horowitz led a $5.6 million seed round in 2021, bringing in Floodgate, Unusual Ventures, Dreamers.vc, and the Cultural Leadership Fund. A year later, the OpenAI Startup Fund led a $23.5 million Series A — one of the most high-profile AI productivity deals of 2022 — valuing the company at roughly $110 million and giving Mem early access to OpenAI's frontier models and Azure infrastructure.

What Mem Actually Does

At its core, Mem treats your notes not as static documents but as a living knowledge graph. Notes created across iOS, Mac, Windows, and web are automatically linked by topic, surfaced by context, and made searchable via natural language. Mem Chat functions as a personalized AI assistant that can answer questions, create new notes, summarize meeting transcripts, and reorganize entire collections — all drawing exclusively from your own stored knowledge, not the open internet. The Deep Search feature can retrieve notes by vague memory ("that meeting with the crypto expert") rather than keyword. Voice Mode, launched as part of Mem 2.0, transcribes and structures brain dumps recorded on the go into clean, searchable notes.

  • Smart Collections: AI-grouped clusters of related notes, maintained automatically
  • Heads Up: Proactively surfaces related notes and meeting context before you need them
  • Email Capture: Forward anything to save@mem.ai and it becomes an organized note
  • Chrome Extension: Clip web pages into the knowledge base with one click

The platform relaunched as Mem 2.0 in late 2025, introducing a new brand identity centered on the "AI Thought Partner" concept and repricing to a simpler $12/month Pro tier. Despite operating with a lean team of under 50 employees, Mem has developed a loyal niche among executives, consultants, and researchers who generate high volumes of meeting notes and research materials.

Mem AI FAQ's

What is Mem AI?

Mem is an AI-powered note-taking and knowledge management app. It automatically organizes your notes, links related content, and lets you chat with your personal knowledge base using natural language.

Is there a free version of Mem?

Yes. Mem's free plan allows up to 25 new notes and 25 chat messages per month. The Pro plan at $12/month unlocks unlimited usage of all features.

Does Mem work on Android?

As of early 2026, Mem does not have a native Android app. It is available on iOS, macOS, Windows, and via the web browser.

How does Mem differ from Notion or Obsidian?

Unlike Notion or Obsidian which rely on manual folder structures and tags, Mem uses AI to automatically organize and link notes. You don't need to create a filing system — Mem builds it for you.

Is my data private in Mem?

Mem encrypts data in transit and at rest. Their AI models do process your notes to power features, so users should review Mem's privacy policy and trust center for details on data handling.
