The AI Pivot That Worked

Freepik's pivot to generative AI, launched in beta in March 2023, defied conventional wisdom: instead of AI cannibalizing its stock business, it created new demand. By end-2023, the platform reported 150 million monthly users, up from 41 million in 2021, with 120 million AI-generated assets created that year alone. The AI image generator integrated models from Google (Imagen, Veo), Ideogram, Flux, and Freepik's own proprietary Mystic model — giving creators a single dashboard across the best generation engines without multiple subscriptions. By 2025, Freepik's EQT portfolio page listed over 100 million users and 800,000 paid subscribers.
