More About Framer AI

In 2006, two Dutch designers started a small Mac app studio called Sofa. By 2011, their award-winning software was good enough that Mark Zuckerberg sent them an email—and Sofa was acquired by Facebook. Koen Bok and Jorn van Dijk spent two years in Menlo Park designing some of Facebook's most-used surfaces: Messages, Ads, Video, Photos. Then they left to solve a problem they'd watched frustrate design teams everywhere.

The Broken Loop

The problem was this: designers built beautiful mock-ups in static tools, handed them to engineers, and watched something different ship. Interactive prototyping was supposed to fix it—and Framer's first product, a CoffeeScript-powered prototyping library launched in 2014, spread virally to design teams at Dropbox, Twitter, Microsoft, and Amazon. But the bet that high-fidelity prototyping would replace static design never fully paid off. By 2021, ARR had slipped to $2.5M. The founders faced a choice.

Their pivot was radical: instead of a tool that produced prototypes that got thrown away, they would build one where the design was the website. Framer Sites launched in May 2022 with a Figma-like canvas that published directly to a global CDN. Growth came back with a hockey-stick shape: $10M ARR in 2023, $25M in 2024, $50M by mid-2025. In August 2025 the company raised $100M at a $2B valuation—unicorn status—led by Meritech Capital and Atomico.

What Makes It Different

  • Wireframer: Describe a page in natural language and AI generates a draft layout from ~100 pre-designed sections—what the team calls a reliable "7/10 first pass."
  • Workshop: AI component generation; available on Pro and above.
  • React-native canvas: Every published site is production-grade React, not a design export—giving real performance and SEO scores.
  • CMS + localization: Built-in relational CMS with AI-powered translation into up to 20 languages.

Today roughly 40% of the most recent Y Combinator batch ships their main site on Framer. Enterprise clients include Scale AI, Perplexity, Miro, and Bilt Rewards. With ~500,000 monthly active users and ~50,000 paying customers averaging ~$1,000 per year, Framer is operating near break-even while targeting $100M ARR in 2026.

Framer AI FAQ's

What is Framer AI and how does it differ from Webflow?

Framer AI is a no-code website builder with a Figma-like design canvas that publishes directly to a global CDN. Unlike Webflow, which uses a class-based CSS system with a steeper learning curve, Framer lets designers work in a more familiar, freeform canvas and get live sites without coding. Framer also has native AI tools like Wireframer and Workshop built in, while Webflow's AI integrations are more limited.

Can I import my Figma designs into Framer?

Yes. Framer supports importing Figma designs via a plugin. Frames and components from Figma can be brought into Framer and then turned into live, published pages. This makes it popular for teams that design in Figma and want to publish directly without a rebuild in a separate CMS.

Is Framer free to use?

Framer has a free plan that lets you build and publish on a framer.app subdomain with access to 10 CMS collections, 1,000 pages, and basic AI tools. A paid plan is required to connect a custom domain. Paid plans start at $10/month (billed annually) for the Basic plan.

Does Framer support CMS and dynamic content?

Yes. Framer has a built-in CMS with support for multiple collections, relational CMS (Pro plan and above), and AI-powered localization into multiple languages. It integrates with external data sources via Fetch and supports Notion sync for content teams.

How does Framer AI generation work?

Framer includes Wireframer, an AI tool that generates page layouts based on a text prompt by selecting from around 100 pre-designed sections. The result is described as a reliable first draft that users can then customize. Pro plans and above include Workshop, which generates individual UI components from prompts.
