From GPU Infrastructure to the IDE of the Future

In 2021, two MIT graduates — Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen — founded a company called Exafunction to solve a very different problem: making GPU virtualization more efficient for deep learning workloads. By mid-2022, they were managing tens of thousands of GPUs across public clouds for enterprise AI teams. Then the generative AI wave broke.

Sensing that the real value wasn't in infrastructure but in the applications it enabled, Mohan and Chen pivoted the entire company. They renamed it Codeium and launched an AI coding assistant for developers — initially entirely free. The bet was audacious: give away the best code completion tool on the market, build a massive developer base, and convert enterprises. By early 2023, that strategy was working. Codeium went from roughly 10,000 users to 300,000 active developers inside a year, with 100 enterprise customers already on board.

What Codeium Actually Does

At its core, Codeium provides real-time code completions that understand your entire codebase — not just the current file. It supports over 70 programming languages and integrates with 40+ IDEs including VS Code, JetBrains, Vim/Neovim, and Xcode. Its Cascade agentic engine can autonomously handle multi-file edits, run terminal commands, debug issues, and generate tests — making it far more than a simple autocomplete plugin. The November 2024 launch of the Windsurf Editor transformed Codeium from an IDE plugin into a full agentic development environment, directly challenging Cursor and the broader AI-native IDE category.

Notable enterprise customers include Zillow, Dell, and Anduril. The platform processes over 100 billion tokens daily. By August 2024, Codeium had closed a $150M Series C at a $1.25B valuation led by General Catalyst — reaching unicorn status just three years after founding. ARR hit approximately $40M in early 2025 and an estimated $82M by July 2025. In April 2025, the company rebranded as Windsurf to signal its agentic-IDE-first future.
