More About Codeium

From GPU Infrastructure to the IDE of the Future

In 2021, two MIT graduates — Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen — founded a company called Exafunction to solve a very different problem: making GPU virtualization more efficient for deep learning workloads. By mid-2022, they were managing tens of thousands of GPUs across public clouds for enterprise AI teams. Then the generative AI wave broke.

Sensing that the real value wasn't in infrastructure but in the applications it enabled, Mohan and Chen pivoted the entire company. They renamed it Codeium and launched an AI coding assistant for developers — initially entirely free. The bet was audacious: give away the best code completion tool on the market, build a massive developer base, and convert enterprises. By early 2023, that strategy was working. Codeium went from roughly 10,000 users to 300,000 active developers inside a year, with 100 enterprise customers already on board.

What Codeium Actually Does

At its core, Codeium provides real-time code completions that understand your entire codebase — not just the current file. It supports over 70 programming languages and integrates with 40+ IDEs including VS Code, JetBrains, Vim/Neovim, and Xcode. Its Cascade agentic engine can autonomously handle multi-file edits, run terminal commands, debug issues, and generate tests — making it far more than a simple autocomplete plugin. The November 2024 launch of the Windsurf Editor transformed Codeium from an IDE plugin into a full agentic development environment, directly challenging Cursor and the broader AI-native IDE category.

  • Cascade: Agentic AI that plans and executes multi-step coding tasks with deep codebase awareness
  • Tab/Supercomplete: Fast, context-aware autocomplete with whole-line and multi-line suggestions
  • Enterprise deployment flexibility: SaaS, hybrid, self-hosted, and FedRAMP High options for security-conscious organizations
  • Zero Data Retention: Default for Teams and Enterprise; customer code never trains public models

Notable enterprise customers include Zillow, Dell, and Anduril. The platform processes over 100 billion tokens daily. By August 2024, Codeium had closed a $150M Series C at a $1.25B valuation led by General Catalyst — reaching unicorn status just three years after founding. ARR hit approximately $40M in early 2025 and an estimated $82M by July 2025. In April 2025, the company rebranded as Windsurf to signal its agentic-IDE-first future.

Codeium FAQ's

Is Codeium really free for individual developers?

Yes. Codeium offers a permanent free tier for individual developers that includes 25 prompt credits per month, unlimited Tab completions, and access to its Cascade Base model across 40+ IDEs. There are no hidden fees for individual use.

How does Codeium differ from GitHub Copilot?

Codeium supports 40+ IDEs (not just VS Code and JetBrains), offers a genuinely free individual tier with no trial expiration, provides self-hosted and air-gapped deployment for enterprises, and does not train public models on customer code by default. Its Cascade agentic engine enables multi-file autonomous coding tasks that go beyond Copilot's completion-focused model.

What is the Windsurf Editor and how does it relate to Codeium?

Windsurf Editor is the AI-native IDE launched by Codeium in November 2024 that wraps the Cascade agentic engine in a full development environment. In April 2025, Codeium rebranded entirely to Windsurf. The editor enables autonomous multi-step coding workflows, whereas the Codeium plugins continue to provide autocomplete and chat inside existing IDEs like VS Code and JetBrains.

Can enterprises deploy Codeium on their own infrastructure?

Yes. Codeium offers SaaS, hybrid, and fully self-hosted (on-premises/air-gapped) deployment options. The self-hosted option shifts inference costs to the customer and eliminates any data leaving the organization, making it popular with defense, financial services, and healthcare customers.

Does Codeium train on my code?

No. Codeium does not train its public models on customer code by default. Teams and Enterprise plans have Zero Data Retention (ZDR) enabled by default, and individual users can opt into ZDR as well. All data transmissions are encrypted in transit and at rest.
